Film Production

In this hands-on workshop using state of the art digital equipment and facilities of the McCallie C.A.V.E., (Center for Animation, Video and Entertainment), students will conceive and produce short dramatic films working in small teams. Each day will be devoted to a different aspect of filmmaking: writing, planning, shooting, editing and finishing. At the end of the week, there will be a world premiere screening with families invited to attend in our 4K 7.1 surround sound theater.

Taught by a veteran award-winning filmmaker and film educator, McCallie’s Dave Porfiri, this workshop will expose students to the nuts and bolts of the filmmaking process while challenging them to think like visual storytellers.

McCallie’s Center for Animation, Video and Entertainment (CAVE) is an unparalleled resource for students with an interest in video production, editing, sound design and more. With a fully-equipped cyclorama studio, edit and color grading suite, audio recording facility and high-end computers, McCallie campers can push their creative energies to the limit.

About the Director: Dave Porfiri

B.S. University of Miami, M.F.A. University of Southern California

Fun fact: I started making little films at the same age as many of my campers. Back then there was no internet and no You Tube. I mowed lawns to save money to buy a Super-8 movie camera. The film cost about $20 for three minutes and you had to send it off to get it processed and returned in the mail. Personal computers were in their infancy then and there were no video editing applications. All editing had to be done by physically cutting and splicing the film together. I still have all those films in a shoebox. One of my films starred a classmate who would grow up to become the drummer for the rock band the Goo Goo Dolls.

I have been at McCallie for 7 years teaching hands-on film production classes,  a film appreciation class and an after school advanced filmmaking workshop.

All McCallie Summer Camps begin at 9:00 am with Early Drop Off between 8:00 am and 9:00 am for no extra charge. No campers should ever be dropped off before 8:00 am or picked up after 5:00 pm.
